5 places Not to Go in a Zombie Apocalypse
Survival is all about being prepared, and every now and then it makes it interesting to throw in a scenario that probably won’t happen, but it doesn’t hurt to be ready just in case. When it comes to fictional survival situations, nothing seems to come up more in modern culture than zombies. So in the extremely unlikely event that an undead uprising begins, here are 5 places not to go in a zombie apocalypse.
Hospitals
It won’t matter how the outbreak begins, the first people involved will be taken to hospitals for treatment while everyone works out what’s going on. People who have been infected but not turned yet will go here for treatment, and after people realize the threat they are facing and become desperate, these buildings will be raided for supplies or taken over by groups trying to force people to treat them first. The second reason is that they normally only build hospitals to support the local population center, so the larger the hospital, the more troublemakers and infected people there will be.
Police stations
The people in society who are supposed to protect you will do just that, right up until they realize the government has no more power, and then they will do one of two things. Since they are still normal people with families, it’s likely they will put their badges down and go through the apocalypse as civilians. The other would be to take all those guns and vehicles and try to survive on their own. Either way, it won’t help to go there as a civilian, and the other danger would be the thousands of people rushing to the stations for protection.
Supermarkets and gas stations
They may seem like a good place to go but would be very dangerous throughout the early parts of an outbreak. There are no laws in an outbreak, but there are thousands of desperate people with weapons who wouldn’t think twice about taking things by force. One of the most common answers for where people would go during an outbreak is a supermarket, and even if everyone was friendly, you’re going to be trapped in a giant room with no electricity and tons of gone-off food with lots of people making noise. Gas stations would be drained straight away, and if the electricity went off before they could be emptied, people would surely try and access the fuel on their own and cause an explosion.
Government-designated safe zones
The government will hold on for as long as possible and while they still have control over the army, will designate a series of safe zones for people to go. The number one rule during the beginning is the more people there are, the more danger there is. The safe zones will surely contain people who are infected but haven’t turned yet, leaving them to turn within the zones while surrounded by lots of tightly packed people.
Airports and train stations
The power grids will quickly shut down because the workers won’t be doing their jobs when there are zombies everywhere. Trains won’t be able to move through certain stations where electricity takes over, and it only takes one accident on the tracks for the whole network to come to a standstill. Airports are equally risky as people will be trying to get on flights by force and that’s if the pilots haven’t already gone somewhere. When people panic they will use any method to “get out of there” that they can, and transportation hubs will obviously be a priority destination.
Other things to watch out for in a zombie apocalypse
- The electrical, water, and gas grids will all switch off really quickly. The people working there won’t be doing their jobs when their families are at risk and will likely implement a safety shut-down procedure.
- The nights will be very dark without any street or house lighting, and bandits will likely use this to hunt at night by looking for artificial light sources.
- Get away from large groups of people and find the most remote area possible. This isn’t an option in cities or crowded countries, so traveling elsewhere is a must.
- Be very careful of fortified buildings in the wrong area because even though they might not be able to get inside, they could easily surround and trap you until you run out of supplies.
- There are about 70 million people in the UK and the country is only about 250 miles wide in the center. This means that if a zombie is on one coast and only walks at 1 mph, in theory, it would take just under 10.5 days to reach the other coast. Of course, it doesn’t work out like this, but the point is the millions of zombies in the big cities could easily reach your safehouse in a matter of days or weeks, so keep that in mind and always have an escape route.
- As for where to go, the best places would be anywhere specifically prepared for such an event, which is nowhere, or to a remote area or coastline. The coast will provide an escape should you be attacked by too many, and offers the choice of traveling by boat and doing supply runs without danger of getting swarmed.
